Restaurant business and service characteristics

When starting a restaurant business, one should always be aware of the fact that this kind of business belongs to the service economy. Service sector economy has their own specific characteristics that should be taken into consideration when designing the business plans for starting up a restaurant business. Therefore, entrepreneurs should carefully consider their own targets, objectives and necessities for starting a business from one side, and the customers needs and wants on the other side.

Usually entrepreneurs that start up restaurant business should carefully choose a specific location, the size of the premises, the content of the menu, application of restaurant software for easier managing of the overall business, making decision of buying or renting the premise, etc.

The future entrepreneur should be aware of the specific characteristics of the services. Basically services are intangible, imperishable, heterogenic and inseparable. 

Intangibility refers to the specific abstraction of the services. For example one could go in the restaurant and eat some food or drink a good wine, but actually the food that is served and the wine that is drunk are physical evidence of the service. As such they represent physical  evidence of the service.

Furthermore, services are inseparable, that means that service could be delivered at one point of time by sales person for example (or by machines with special software when we dealing with self services). For example, the food could be delivered by the waiter’s and the manner and way of servicing the customers is very important at this point. Serving food is in separate from the waiter who is delivering food, for example.

Services are heterogenic, and that means that they could vary one from each other even though the context is that same.
Imperishability is the fourth main characteristic of the services. This refers to the fact that services could not be perishable and they could not be storage. Foe example the manager of the restaurant could storage the boxes of juice, but when juice is served, that could be happened once, and could not be storage for some next time in the future.

Hence, entrepreneurs that have an idea to start up restaurant business should be aware of these characteristics of services. These characteristics of the services applies at the restaurant businesses because starting a restaurant business is entering in the world of services, and being aware of these characteristics could helped in the process of designing business plans and contribute to successful starting of the restaurant business.
